How to Perform Ghusl Properly: Step-by-Step Guide with Sunnah & FAQs

February 22, 20266 min read

What Is Ghusl?

Ghusl is a full-body purification in Islam. It is required in certain situations to become spiritually clean before performing acts of worship like Salah (prayer).

Allah says in the Qur’an: “If you are in a state of major impurity, then purify yourselves.” (Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:6)

When Is Ghusl Required?

  • After marital relations
  • After ejaculation (wet dream or otherwise)
  • After menstruation (for women)
  • After postnatal bleeding

Without Ghusl, a person cannot perform Salah or touch the Qur’an.

Faraiz (Obligatory Acts) of Ghusl

For Ghusl to be valid, certain actions are compulsory (fard). Without these, Ghusl will not be complete:

  • 1. Rinsing the Mouth (Madmadah)
Water must reach the entire mouth properly.
  • 2. Cleaning the Nose (Istinshaq)
Water should be taken into the nose and cleaned.
  • 3. Washing the Entire Body
Every part of the body must be washed, ensuring that no area remains dry — even hidden parts like under the hair, armpits, and between fingers.

If these three actions are completed properly, the Ghusl is valid. The rest are Sunnah and increase reward.

Step-by-Step Guide to Perform Ghusl

1. Make Intention (Niyyah)

Make the intention in your heart to purify yourself for the sake of Allah.

2. Say “Bismillah”

Begin with the name of Allah.

3. Wash Hands

Wash both hands up to the wrists three times.

4. Clean Private Parts

Wash any impurity from the private areas.

5. Perform Wudu

Perform wudu (ablution) like you do before Salah. You may delay washing the feet until the end.

6. Pour Water Over Head

Pour water over your head three times, making sure it reaches the roots of your hair.

7. Wash Entire Body

Wash the entire body thoroughly, starting from the right side, then the left. Make sure no part remains dry.

8. Wash Feet (if delayed)

If you did not wash your feet during wudu, wash them at the end.

Sunnah Way of Ghusl

The Prophet ﷺ used to perform Ghusl in a simple and complete way, ensuring cleanliness without wasting water. Following his method brings more reward.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting to rinse mouth and nose
  • Leaving parts of the body dry
