Taraweeh Prayer Explained: A Complete Guide for Ramadan Nights
What Is Taraweeh Prayer?
Taraweeh is a special voluntary night prayer performed during Ramadan after the ‘Isha prayer. It is one of the most beloved acts of worship in this blessed month.
The word “Taraweeh” comes from the Arabic word meaning rest, because people would take short breaks after every four rak‘ahs.
Is Taraweeh Obligatory?
Taraweeh is not fard (obligatory). It is Sunnah Mu’akkadah — a strongly emphasized Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ prayed it in congregation for a few nights but stopped so that it would not become compulsory upon the Ummah.
Later, during the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), Muslims were gathered to pray Taraweeh in congregation regularly.
How Many Rak‘ahs Are There?
This is a common question. Some pray 8 rak‘ahs, while many pray 20. Both practices are found in Islamic tradition.
The most important thing is sincerity and focus. Whether you pray 8 or 20, pray with humility and attention.
Can Taraweeh Be Prayed at Home?
Yes. Taraweeh can be prayed:
- In the mosque in congregation
- At home with family
- Alone
All options are valid. Praying in congregation has extra reward, but praying at home is also completely acceptable.
Can Women Pray Taraweeh in the Mosque?
Yes, women are allowed to pray Taraweeh in the mosque while observing proper modesty. However, praying at home is also rewarding.
Is It Necessary to Complete the Entire Qur’an?
No, completing the entire Qur’an in Taraweeh is not obligatory. It is a beautiful tradition in many mosques, but even if the Qur’an is not completed, the prayer is still valid.
What If Someone Joins Late?
If you join Taraweeh late, simply join the Imam wherever he is. After the Imam finishes, stand up and complete the rak‘ahs you missed.
Can We Read from the Qur’an or Phone?
Since Taraweeh is voluntary, many scholars allow reading from the Mushaf. Reading from a phone is also permitted if necessary, but distractions should be avoided.
What Matters Most?
Taraweeh is not about rushing or competing. It is about standing before Allah with sincerity. Even a few rak‘ahs with deep focus are better than many without concentration.
Let your Taraweeh be a means of reflection, forgiveness, and closeness to Allah during these blessed nights.
